OPINION: ‘Black People Should Boycott All Asian Businesses, Teach Them a Lesson’

January 21, 2021

“If Black People were to stop buying from and supporting their [Asian] business today, then they’d really have their panties in a twist. Don’t bite the hand that feeds y’all sweetie. Just stay quiet.”

I’ve seen this response literally hundreds of times. I don’t think you quite understand how screwed you are if you decide to boycott Asian businesses. Not just the mom and pop restaurants and stores, but major corporations that own the patents and manufacture the goods that allow you to live in the 21st century.

First thing you’ll miss. Your smartphone. Apple needs Samsung and LG. They’re the only ones who produce OLED screens and control the patents. Without them, you don’t have a screen on your smartphone. In July 2020, Apple failed to meet OLED panel purchases and was forced to pay Samsung $950 million as compensation, according to MacRumors.

The 3G, 4G, or 5G on your smartphone belongs to Samsung as well, doesn’t matter if you’re using an Apple. Not to mention Taiwan’s TSMC chips in your phone. Back to rotary phones for you.

Car? You really don’t have a lot of choices. Support “white supremacy” by purchasing white-owned car companies like Ford, GM (Duramax engines were co-developed by Isuzu), or Tesla (which uses Japanese parts), Daimler-Benz, BMW, VW, Fiat, etc…or support “white supremacy,” oh I’m sorry, Asian owned businesses, i.e., Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Honda/Acura, Jaguar/Land Rover, etc….Back to horse and carriage or a AMC Gremlin for you.

The music you listen to? Hate to break it to you, there is a 65% chance your favorite artist back then or now is contracted under Sony Music, an Asian owned business. We both know record labels make a killing off artists—they usually make their money from concerts, not from music sales.

Sony Music owns Columbia Records, RCA, Epic Records, Arista, Arista Nashville, BMG Records, and EMI. So if you’re listening to Lil Nas X, Beyoncé, Beast Coast, Big $tunt, Michael Jackson, 5IVE, 24KGoldn, Prince, Whitney Houston, Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Adé, DJ Khaled, etc…Sony keeps 70% of all royalties when you listen to these artists on Spotify or the traditional radio.

I’ve just listed the basics to keep things simplistic. Your phone, car, music. I haven’t even touched the surface. However, feel free to “boycott Asian businesses,” to “teach us a lesson.” I applaud that type of conviction. It’s not every day a group of people actively decide to turn back the hands of time 50 years and basically make themselves into a modern version of Amish people.
