Texas Teacher Shot Dead By Man She Met Online

January 14, 2023

SUGAR LAND, TX—A Texas elementary school teacher who was shot dead in her backyard met her alleged killer on a dating app just a week before she was murdered.

Charvas Thompson, Wendy Duan’s boyfriend, was arrested in Louisiana, more than 260 miles from where he allegedly shot her multiple times in her Sugar Land backyard last week.

Wendy’s mother told KHOU11 she warned her daughter about meeting people online and had a bad feeling about Thompson once she was shown a picture of him.

“She showed me the picture,” Duan’s mother said. “I don’t know his name. She just saying, ‘Do you like him?’ I said no.”

Duan was shot and killed last Saturday at her home in Sugar Land’s New Territory subdivision. She met Thompson on the “MeetMe” dating app a week earlier. Detectives believe Thompson shot and killed Duan during an argument.

Wendy was an Alief ISD teacher who taught third grade at Boone elementary and was known to be a trusting and loving person. Her mother believes Thompson took her daughter’s kindness as a sign of weakness.

“The guy is very evil,” she told KHOU11. “He took her life away. I hope this guy gets the full legal punishment.”

Thompson is currently behind bars in Louisiana. He is currently in the process of being extradited back to Texas where he will face charges in Fort Bend County. His bond is set at $500,000.
