Garland Appoints Special Counsel to Probe Biden Classified Documents

January 13, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C.—United States Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Korean-American Robert Hur, considered to be an “establishment Republican” to lead the Justice Department probe into President Biden’s handling of classified documents after revelations that Biden stored documents next to his Corvette at his Delaware home’s garage.

Public disclosure on Monday revealed Biden stashed at least 10 sensitive documents, some labeled “top secret,” next to his Corvette in his “locked” garage in his Delaware home and at a Washington office space he used after his vice presidency.

Robert Hur, 49, was nominated to be US attorney for Maryland back in November 2017 by former President Donald Trump. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in March 2018 and took office in April of that year.

Before his nomination as US attorney for Maryland, Hur served as an assistant US attorney in Maryland from 2007 to 2014 and “prosecuted gang violence, firearms offenses, and narcotics trafficking, as well as white-collar offenses including financial institutions fraud, public corruption, mortgage fraud, tax offenses, computer network intrusions, and intellectual property theft,” his former law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, said.

Hur was born to South Korean parents. He served less than three years as US Attorney before resigning in February 2021.

His highest-profile case was the secured conviction of former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, who was sentenced to three years in prison for using a self-published children’s book scheme to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars to her political campaign, according to the New York Post.

It’s unclear if Hur will go further down the rabbit hole and investigate President Biden’s son, Hunter, or his brother James. Hunter Biden listed Joe’s Wilmington, Delaware residence as his home on a 2018 form.

Documents show Hunter introduced his father to “associates” from China, Mexico, and Ukraine on official trips, at Joe’s Delaware residence, and at a 2015 DC restaurant gathering.

Hunter is currently under investigation by the US attorney’s office in Delaware for potential tax fraud, illegal foreign lobbying, money laundering, and lying about drug use on a firearm-purchase form, reports The Post.

Hur earned his law degree from Stanford University and earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University. He’s married to Cara Brewer, an attorney.
