Sony’s ‘Cobra Kai’ is Breaking Major Netflix Records

January 13, 2021

Netflix revealed on Tuesday that Season 3 is on track to be watched by nearly 41 million households, within its first 28 days, according to Deadline.

Cobra Kai is the spinoff of Sony Picture’s Karate Kid saga and was initially a huge hit over at YouTube. However, Sony Pictures TV decided to move the show to Netflix over the summer and the first two seasons became an instant hit on the platform and became Sony’s biggest hit since Breaking Bad.

Across all three seasons, nearly 73 million Netflix households have watched at least one episode, and Season 3 is currently No. 1 in 28 countries including the U.S., U.K., Argentina, Greece, and Sri Lanka, according to Deadline.

Cobra Kai moved from YouTube to Netflix last year after the former moved out of original scripted programming. The show’s first episode broke records and clocked in with 55 million views for its opening episode.

There are active discussions between Sony and Netflix to potentially expand the franchise with other Karate Kid series, possibly with Sensei Kreese. Many netizens pray it won’t have anything to do with Hilary Swank’s story arc in The Next Karate Kid, released back in 1994.

The Next Karate Kid received poor reviews and was a box office bomb and currently sits at 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cobra Kai is written and executive produced by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg via their production company, Counterbalance Entertainment. Will Smith, James Lassiter, and Caleeb Pinkett executive produce for Overbrook Entertainment along with Susan Ekins in association with Sony Pictures Television. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka serve as co-executive producers.
