79-Year-Old Asian Woman Violently Attacked in SF Muni Bus

December 13, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—A 79-year-old Asian woman was savagely attacked while boarding a San Francisco Muni bus to go to work on the morning of December 3.

Lisa requested to ABC7’s Dion Lim, that her last name not be used for privacy reasons.

Lisa was boarding the 38 bus at Geary and Laguna heading downtown to her shift at Oracle Park, where she has nearly a 30-year career in concessions for the Giants, 49ers, and the Warriors. However, on the morning of December 3, her life and sense of security changed for good.

“I get in the bus, need to scan my Clipper. I saw him standing up – he kicked me with his foot. In the stomach” she says.

Surveillance footage used in the police investigation, shows Lisa getting knocked to the ground in seconds. No arrests have been made in the case.

When Dion Lim asked Lisa if the male assailant took anything, she clearly stated the attack was completely random. She now wonders if she was attacked because she’s Indonesian (Asian).

The San Francisco Police Department told ABC7, “We have not determined or found evidence that this incident was a motivated hate crime.”

ABC7 News analyzed Muni crime data, which showed the number of assaults has increased by 43% since 2020. However, the 43% increase is still significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels during a time when ridership was much higher.

“I just pray, pray to God, please help me I get home safe,” Lisa told Dion Lim.

Lisa is already back to work and riding the bus again.
